On May 22, 2020, BBB reached out to Square regarding Cash App and unemployment benefits. The company responded that, Cash App experienced multiple technical issues that disrupted services, including funds availability. Cash App maintains a status page at status.cash.app, which the company updates when a widespread issue is identified and where customers can view updates on ongoing or recent disruptions to service.
Additionally, Square shared that they are aware of scammers that have fraudulently obtained state unemployment benefits and transferred those funds into Cash App accounts. During the weeks that this pattern was observed and in an abundance of caution, Cash App has proactively held funds in a small number of accounts that may have been used by these scammers. Cash App has notified the customers affected by this issue and is working to review accounts as quickly as possible. Any customers that are in need of additional assistance can contact Cash Support directly at cash.app/help.
