- Advertising Review:
BBB sent correspondence to Veteran's Roofing on March 1, March 5, March 8, and March 15, 2019 requesting substantiation for advertised claims on their website www.veteransroofing.net. The business has not provided the information requested or modified the advertising.
BBB asked for substantiation of being "Rated #1 Home Improvement Company in Western, New York", proof of certification of "Veteran's certified Kitchen and Bath Remodeler's" as claimed in their advertising, and if they are certified by Certainteed,
The business responded stating: "Rated #1 is substantiated by ************ (the largest shingle/siding distributer in wny) as we are there highest rated company ,,,,also your asking if are kitchen & bath is certified by Certainteed a roofing distributor?? ...also your rating system is drastically flawed ,we complete approximately 500 jobs per year and if yous have minimal complaints on us ,,you should do ratings based on amount of jobs completed since we proudly have over 95% customer satisfactory which does not or should not equal a "c" rating."
BBB contacted the company that Veteran's Roofing states has rated them #1 and BBB was told that they do not rate companies but confirmed that Veteran's Roofing is their customer.
According to BBB's Code of Advertising:
1. Basic Principles of the Code
1.1 The primary responsibility for truthful and non-deceptive advertising rests with the advertiser. Advertisers should be prepared to substantiate any objective claims or offers made before publication or broadcast. Upon request, they should present such substantiation promptly to the advertising medium or BBB.
1.2 Advertisements which are untrue, misleading, deceptive, fraudulent, falsely disparaging of competitors, or insincere offers to sell, shall not be used.
1.3 An advertisement as a whole may be misleading by implication, although every sentence separately considered may be literally true.
1.4 Misrepresentation may result not only from direct statements, but by omitting or obscuring a material fact.28. Objective Superlative Claims
Superlative statements in advertisements about the tangible qualities and performance values of a product or service are objective claims for which the advertiser must possess substantiation as they can be based upon accepted standards or tests. As statements of fact, such claims, like “#1 in new car sales in the city,” can be proved or disproved.
