Pattern of Complaints

Beginning in November 2019, the BBB began receiving complaints/customer reviews that exhibited the following pattern:

BBB files indicate that this business has a pattern of complaints concerning door to door sales representatives who are using misleading sales tactics, misrepresenting themselves as the consumer’s current energy company and asking to see their electricity bill. Additionally, consumers allege Rushmore Energy’s representatives display poor customer service such as pushy, aggressive, coercive, and not forthcoming they were representing Rushmore Energy.

Recent customer reviewer stated door to door rep claimed to be with their energy company and requested to see their bill. Once he was done, he asked them to sign his I-pad stating the rep had answered all their questions.  The rep signed them up for service without full disclosure.

Another recent consumer alleged the following in a complaint: "2 individuals came to my door 10/1 claiming to be with the State of PA. They would not stop knocking until I answered the door. After asking them if what they were doing was legal and asking them to leave several times, the female insisted that there would be repercussions for not complying and asked to see my recent PPL bill in .pdf form and at several points tried to take my phone out of my hand. She then said I had to voice verify. The number that called me came up as “Potential Spam”. I then had to aggressively tell them to leave and called local police."

A complaint was received in Feb 2022 stating a door-to-door representative showed up to their door claiming to be with their current energy company informing thee consumer their meter was switched to a different type of meter to they would be using clean energy now.  When the consumer called their current electric provider, they were told the representative was not from them. Then he found he was switched.

A customer review from March 23, 2022, mentions how the door-to-door representative was flirty way too much and was more concerned to find out if the consumer was single then if she wanted to use their services.

Complaint from March 2022, stated the door-to-door representative told the consumer their townhome community was requiring them to change their electric provider to Rushmore Energy.  The consumer later found out that was not the truth. The consumer stated they felt lied to and taken advantage of.

Customer review from April 2022 stated the door-to-door representative stated they were the new supplier of energy to their neighborhood implying it was a mandatory switch. He also stated the rate was lower than his current REP. Unfortunately, the bill did not decrease but increased.

May 2022 complaint stated 2 door-to-door reps telling him they were on a list of customers they had to visit to update their energy plan and prevent his prices from going up.  They also stated they were with his current provider and had a tablet that was running his current company’s operating system with logo. He stated he felt pressured and at the then was told to answer yes to all the questions asked by the 3rd party verification person.  Consumer later found out Rushmore has not affiliation with his current provider.  Per the consumer, “They lied to me and used deceptive sales tactics to sign me up.” He has tried to reach Rushmore to cancel but they have not gotten back with him.

July 2022 - Per customer review, two reps invited themselves into the consumer's home where they acted unprofessional. One rep noticed pictures of her family and commented, "I needed him and a man to raise them correctly." After they left the same rep would call and leave voice mails asking her to drive to his city and go on a date although she had not provided him her phone number. He must have taken it from her account information. When she reported the sexual harassment to the company, they only offered to waive her early cancellation fee.

A complaint received in July 2022 stated two reps showed up at their door saying they had put a cap on his electric meter. They asked for a copy of his bill and his phone. They started entering things on it and then he received a call from Rushmore. The two reps stood in front of him while he answered their question.

August 2022 reviewer stated, "The rep lied and said the paperwork I was signing was my acknowledgment that Rushmore as serving as a 3rd party meter-reading service for ConEd, and that my service wouldn't change."

Complaint filed in September 2022 stated, "In June, a rep came to my house and told me that because the State of New Jersey Utility Commission changed their regulations, I was forced to go with a second party provider. I was assured this was a mandatory change and not only would it not affect my rate, it would actually reduce my monthly charges.  This month after calling Atlantic City Electric, I found I was not only misrepresented, but the KW charge went from .11 to .17, a significant difference. Atlantic City Electric readjusted my bill though said until I dispute the charges with Rushmore, I would still be liable. I called Rushmore and they refused any credit or compromise. After being lied to and guaranteed a lower rate, I found they are (maybe legitimately) price gouging as August and September usage increased by around $100.”

Customer review received in December 2022 stated a door to door representative came to their home and said he was with their current gas company and asked to see their latest bill to see if he could save them money.  When consumer couldn't find their account info, he goes into their email and pulls up the account information, signs them up for Rushmore Energy and tells them to answer yes to al the questions when the lady on the phone asks. They were upset when they found out he has lied to them about who he was.
