- Additional Info:On October 3, 2008 the Better Business Bureau was notified of the circulation of what are believed to be fraudulent checks being sent to consumers. The checks in question are included with a letter inviting the recipient to go foward in becoming a secret shopper as a way to supplement his/her income. The BBB would like to advise consumers that this type of offer is not legitimate and is a variation of the Check Scam, where a consumer receives a check, is instructed to deposit it, and then requested to forward fees for "taxes" or "processing fees". There are in fact no funds behind the check, and the consumer subsequently fowards his or her own money to the outfit requesting it.
- Additional Info:Phone numbers provided in the mailings were traced back to Canada. Addresses listed on the checks have been found to be invalid. Furthermore, the payors and banks listed on the checks are unaware that their businesses have been included in the mailings and are not in anyway associated with the scam.
