The following describes a pending government action that has been formally brought by a government agency but has not yet been resolved. We are providing a summary of the government's allegations, which have not yet been proven.
On April 20, 2021, The United States District Court District of Minnesota indicted Jeremy Wade Wilson. Charges allege Wilson owned and operated Publishers Elite and conducted fraudulent magazine sales through telemarketing.
It is alleged Wilson participated in a scheme to defraud and obtain money using materially false and fraudulent pretenses, representations, and promises by concealment of material facts. Wilson's company Publishers Elite ran a telemarketing call center and provided his telemarketers with scripts containing fraudulent sales pitches for use in defrauding consumers, many of whom were elderly out of hundreds or thousands of dollars.
It is alleged Wilson obtained lists of consumers with active and ongoing magazine subscriptions through other companies and acted to fraudulently pose as victim-consumers' existing magazine provider, calling to renew an existing magazine subscription, often at a reduced cost. Wilson and his company had no existing relationship with most of the consumers and his telemarketers were calling to defraud consumers by tricking them into unwillingly sign up for an entirely new magazine subscription.
