The following describes a pending government action that has been formally brought by a government agency but has not yet been resolved. We are providing a summary of the governments allegations, which have not yet been proven.
On December 21, 2018, the Attorney General for the State of Minnesota filed a lawsuit against Comcast Corporation and its subsidiary Xfinity. The lawsuit alleges that the business is in violation of Minnesota’s Consumer Fraud Act and Uniform Deceptive Trade Practices Act. Specifically, the complaint claims that Comcast has overcharged consumers, charged consumers for unordered products, and failed to deliver promotional Visa gift cards promised in exchange for signing up. The matter is pending.
- Government Actions:Government Action: BBB reports on known government actions involving business’ marketplace conduct:Massachusetts v. Comcast
The following describes a government action that has been resolved by either a settlement or a decision by a court or administrative agency. If the matter is being appealed, it will be noted below.
On or about November 13, 2018, Comcast Corporation entered into a settlement agreement with the Attorney General for the State of Massachusetts. The agreement settles allegations that Comcast misled consumers by failing to disclose hidden fees in cable bills in violation of Massachusetts consumer protection laws. Specifically, the Attorney General’s Office alleged that Comcast did not adequately disclose that additional costs were associated with “locked-in” rates and that fees could escalate during the term of the contract. Under terms of the settlement, Comcast agreed to pay $700,000 in termination fee refunds to customers who downgraded service or were involuntarily disconnected between January 2015 and March 2016 and to cancel debts for 20,000 Massachusetts Xfinity customers. The agreement was for settlement purposes only and should not be considered an admission of guilt or finding of violation of the law.
