BBB has received reports from consumers stating that IDT representatives have misrepresented themselves at consumer’s doors, not correctly identifying they are with IDT Energy. There have been reports of consumers being assured changing to IDT Energy will result in a savings on their bill, but then ultimately experiencing an increase in their charges. Consumers have reported being changed from another provider to IDT Energy without their consent.
On August 29, 2017 and September 14, 2017, BBB contacted IDT Energy to address a possible pattern of complaints.

November 19, 2018 Chicago — Attorney General Lisa Madigan today announced she filed a lawsuit against IDT ENERGY INC. (IDT), an alternative retail electric supplier (ARES), for thousands of violations of the state’s consumer fraud laws as a result of a particularly egregious marketing scheme that disproportionately impacted African-American consumers on the South and West sides of Chicago. As a result of Madigan’s investigation, IDT agreed to enter into a consent decree to provide refunds totaling $3 million to more than 176,000 customers. The consent decree also bans the company from marketing in Illinois for two years. Madigan was joined by consumer advocates with Citizen Action/Illinois and Illinois PIRG to announce her lawsuit.
