Consumers across North America have reported to BBB that they were "hired" by various "businesses" to be a secret/mystery shopper to test a business's check cashing or money transfer services. The consumer usually received a cashier's check in advance. The consumers were instructed to deposit the check into their bank accounts and then wire money to another location, typically overseas.
Many times the fake cashier's check will be cashed by a bank because the banking institution listed on the check is a real bank, and the account number and routing number on the check are real. However, a serious problem arises a few days later when the "shopper" is notified by their bank that the check is counterfeit, and they must repay the bank the money that was given to the consumer.
While there are numerous variations to this scam, they all have one common goal – to get the targeted victim to cash the check and wire the money to the scammer. If you are offered a secret/mystery shopper opportunity and are asked to cash a check and then wire the money somewhere else, it is a scam.
