  Before hiring a roofing contractor, get several recommendations from people you know and make sure they are properly licensed. Ask for references and an estimate of the work to be done including the type and cost of materials and labor, the method and procedures to be used and how long the work will take. In some cases new roofing materials can be applied directly over an existing roof. This is usually possible only if there is one roofing layer already in place and if the sheathing-the boards to which the roofing is fastened-is in good condition. Avoid unneeded roof stripping, this may save you money.
  
  Read and understand the contract before you sign. Your written contract should include, among other things, exact specifications, materials, warranty information, permits and inspections, a starting and completion date and a payment schedule. Break the payments into thirds, the first due when the contract is signed, the second at a mid-point and the third when the work is completed to your satisfaction and the job site cleaned up.
  
  Always get a copy of your signed contract, never sign a completion certificate until you have inspected the work and are completely satisfied. Make sure oral promises are put in writing.
