BBB has received a pattern of complaints from customers stating that by purchasing the Miracle Scraper online, customers were automatically signed up for an auto club card that monthly takes $9.95 automatically out of customers' bank accounts or charges their credit cards without their knowledge. Customers had no recollection that this was the case at the time of purchase as there was no information ahead of purchase.

In February 2019, BBB submitted a written request to the company encouraging it to address the pattern of complaints. As of today's date, BBB has had no response.

The business website miraclescraper.com was created 11/14/2017 and last updated 11/21/2019 and has an anonymous ownership.

The following describes a pending government action that has been formally brought by a government agency but has not yet been resolved. We are providing a summary of the government's allegations, which have not yet been proven.

IOWA: On August 26, 2019, the Iowa Attorney General brought action against Robert Schermerhorn for his alleged actions selling Miracle Scraper and contemporaneously enrolling consumers into a buying club called the "VIP Auto Discount Club" without their knowledge or consent and charging them $9.95 a month.

The Iowa Attorney General alleges that Mr. Schermerhorn sells the funnel-shaped plastic scraper on the internet for as little as $19.97 each. Consumers who purchase the item receive an email confirming the order of the scraper. However, hidden beneath the signature of the email is the following:

The Iowa Attorney General alleges that at least 280 Iowans were signed up for the membership club and charged the monthly fee, according to information that Mr. Schermerhorn provided through a subpoena. An Iowa Consumer Protection Division investigator interviewed some of those Iowa consumers, and no one said they knew they were being enrolled into the "VIP Auto Discount Club" or even used its alleged benefits.

The Iowa Attorney General alleges that Mr. Schermerhorn violated the Iowa Buyer Club Memberships Law with his "negative-option, nonconsensual onloading of Iowa consumers into a monthly fee," and that he engaged in deceptive and unfair practices violating the Iowa Consumer Fraud Act.

The AG's lawsuit seeks an injunction preventing Mr. Schermerhorn from selling the scraper and the memberships to Iowa consumers. It also asks a judge to declare the memberships and fees void, require Mr. Schermerhorn to refund consumers' money, and fine him up to $40,000 for each separate violation of the Iowa Consumer Fraud Act.

The matter is pending.
