On January 6, 2023 and January 17, 2023, BBB requested that the business modify its website to be in compliance with the BBB Code of Advertising.
Specifically, BBB noted a statement on the business’s website that reads, “At Above and Beyond Services, Inc, when you review our business services, you receive a $20 discount.”
The practice of incentivizing customer reviews is strongly discouraged by BBB. BBB Customer Review Policy prohibits accepting reviews that may have been incentivized.
Section 30 of The BBB Code of Advertising addresses Testimonials and Endorsements, where it states, in part:
“Advertising which uses testimonials or endorsements is likely to mislead or confuse if… Advertisers compensate consumers for leaving feedback on third-party online blogs or websites but fail to ensure that consumers disclose such facts on those blogs or websites.”
In other words, BBB requires that businesses make it abundantly clear that reviewers are being compensated for providing their feedback.
BBB advised Above and Beyond Services, Inc to discontinue incentivizing reviews or, barring that, to ensure that proper disclosure is made with every customer review published.
