On February 18, 2022, Better Business Bureau contacted Black Widow Exterminators regarding an advertising claim found on its website at https://blackwidowexterminators.com.
Specifically, Black Widow Exterminators claims: "Safe, strong, odorless pest control solutions: We only use the highest-quality products and industry best practices. Our solutions are highly effective for all pests, and they won’t put pets, children, or others at risk", "Top-Rated Pest Control Services in Denver, CO", "Our treatments are environmentally safe, and safe for use", "With our license from the Colorado Department of Agriculture we can use the strongest materials available safely in your home or business. When these products are used according to labeled directions, they are safe around children and pets. Most are odorless and will stay active for at least sixty days and some as long as one year depending on the target pest" and "DENVER’S MOST TRUSTED EXTERMINATORS & PEST CONTROL EXPERTS".
According to BBB’s Code of Advertising, advertisements should be truthful, sincere offers to sell. Advertisers have a responsibility to have substantiation for all claims made and should be able to provide that substantiation upon request. Claims that relate to tangible qualities and performance values of a product or service can be used when the advertiser has substantiation. An example of a claim requiring substantiation would be "#1 car sales in the city." Claims relating to performance and results should be backed up by reliable evidence.
A formal written request to substantiate these claims was emailed and mailed to Black Widow Exterminators on February 18, 2022. As of March 14, BBB has not received a response from Black Widow Exterminators.
