March 2024. A Scam Tracker report was received for J & S Auto sales stating the consumer spoke with Rachel Reeds regarding a 1967 Red Chevy II Nova listed on the company website. Consumer initiated a wire transfer for $20,500 and were told the car would be shipped to them through the car lots carrier to their location on the following Monday. The car never arrived.

There is a sole proprietorship for J & S Preowned Auto Sales on South Preston Highway registered with the WV Secretary of State from 2000. This business is located nearby, but not at the address found on either website found for J&S Auto Sales and J&S Preowned Auto-Sales of 2850 Birds Creek Rd, Tunnelton, WV 26444. This address could not be verified. The registered business did not sell high end classic cars.

Whois.com shows the websites were registered in December 2023 and February 2024 for one year. Using a reverse image search, the vehicles shown in inventory were found to be taken from another car dealer that sells cars on consignment. One of which was showing sold.

To avoid online car sale scams, the BBB recommends the following tips:

  • Beware of too-good-to-be-true deals. It is probably a scam. Scammers know that used cars are in high demand and will tempt shoppers with great deals.
  • See the car before buying. Always make an in-person inspection and take a test drive before you purchase a vehicle.

  • Do not give in to threats or pressure. Resist the urge to act immediately. Always take time to consider a purchase, especially if it is a vehicle that costs thousands of dollars.

  • Do not wire funds for a car. Scammers often ask for wired funds because they are hard to track, and there is no way to get your money back. It is best to make large purchases by cashier's check or credit card.

  • Do not believe everything you see. Scammers are great at mimicking official seals, fonts, photos and other details. Just because a website or email looks official does not mean it is.
  • If you believe you have been a victim of this type of scam, file a complaint with the FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Center at ic3.gov. Also, file a report with BBB.org/Scamtracker, the Federal Trade Commission at reportfraud.ftc.gov, and your State Attorney General’s office.
