BBB received other complaints, from freelance graphic designers who state they were not paid for work provided for the magazine. BBB was unable to process those complaints because employee/employer and wage disputes are outside of our scope of service. In those cases, BBB referred the complainants to the Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development (DWD.Wisconsin.gov or 608-266-3131) for assistance.
608 Magazine has not responded to general requests for basic information from the BBB.
If considering freelance work, BBB recommends that you be sure that there is a contract involved. It is essential to sign a contract. Contracts are especially important, as they provide legal protection for both parties. Contracts should clearly outline the scope of the project, any deadlines you’ve agreed upon, when deposits and full payments are due, cancellation policies, and confidentiality requirements.
If you need guidance on writing a freelance contract, see these resources from Freelancers Union.
