Stated Purpose
It is the mission of the Thurston County Food Bank to eliminate hunger within our community, in the spirit of neighbor helping neighbor.
Programs
Basic Food: Thurston County Food Bank’s (TCFB) basicservice is a week’s worth of food for each family. All items are offered via ashopping model, allowing clients to choose the foods best suited to their needsand preferences. Families may select from the following items:- Fresh produce- Frozen meat or plant-based protein- Bakery items- Dairy and deli products- Frozen foods- Non-perishable foodsBaby Food: A three-day supply of baby food sorted bystages 1-3 is available. This includes rice cereal and formula (milk or soy-based).Nutritionals: Based on availability, Ensure and otherliquid nutritionals are available on request as a meal supplement orreplacement.TEFAP(The Emergency Food Assistance Program): Thesefederal commodities are distributed on a first come first served basis,starting the first of each month, to those who meet income guidelines. Althoughthe amount and quantity is limited, it is offered in addition to the basic foodbag. Service level is based on the household and scaled up for larger families.CSFP(The Commodities SupplementalFood Program): This case-managed federal programtargets seniors over theage of 60. Eligibility requirements must be met before receiving services andare verified every six months. The amount of food is consistent from month tomonth and offered in addition to TEFAP and TCFB’s basic food service.Holiday Meal Baskets: In addition to theFood Bank’s regular food bags, meal baskets are prepared and distributed forThanksgiving, Easter (Easter baskets for the kids, too), and the Fourth ofJuly.FORKids (For Kids Program): This is our school backpackmeal program which targets hungry children. Two days’ worth of kid-friendlyfoods are provided on Fridays at area elementary schools. This program createsa community support bridge for the Free and Reduced School Lunch (Breakfast)Program.Summer School Lunch Program: Healthysack lunches are distributed to children during the summer when school lunchesare not available. Services are targeted to low income children and offeredthrough summer programs and a mobile meal program traveling to variousneighborhoods on a fixed schedule.Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP)Education and Outreach: Under this USDA Program, TCFB assists clients incompleting the SNAP(food stamps) application and provide help negotiatingthe system. The goal is to improve access to food stamp benefits.Food Sampling Events: The Food Bankcurrently has two to three monthly food sampling events.With the help ofvolunteers and nutrition educators, delicious food samples are prepared forclients. The focus is the importance of the preparation and consumption offresh fruits and vegetables with a goal of a 15% increase in these nutritiousfoods within a year’s time. In addition to food samples, TCFB offers recipes,basic cooking tips and ideas, and recipe kits. This program is partially fundedthrough the SNAP-Ed Federal Grant.Birthday Bags: For parents withchildren (up to age 12), bags with small gifts, books, and party favors areavailable to support a family celebration. The bags are designed to be age andgender appropriate.School Gardens: The Food Banksupports school gardens in our service area as a way to provide fresh,nutritious produce to low-income students. Some school gardens donate a portionof their produce to the Food Bank in exchange for summer garden tending andwatering. The Food Bank provides more intensive support to schools that havelarge numbers of students in the FORKids weekend food program.Mobile Food Bank System: This serviceis provided to seniors living in targeted low-income housing wherecircumstances create access barriers to those in need of food bankservices.Requirements: There are no income guidelines to accessregular services at the food bank and it is free of charge. If possible, pleasebring picture I.D. and a current piece of mail. You will also need bags forabout a week’s worth of groceries.
