Advertising Review

On December 2, 2019, BBB contacted Shredder’s Apparel regarding advertising claims on its website, https://shreddersapparel.com/, and social media pages. Specifically, BBB requested the business modify or discontinue claims on its website that 100% of its proceeds on certain items go to the Houston Flood Relief Fund after confirming the organization has disabled new donations. BBB Code of Advertising states advertisements which are untrue, misleading, deceptive, fraudulent, falsely disparaging of competitors, or insincere offers to sell, shall not be used.

BBB also requested the clarify the operational status of the business’s online stores due to multiple advertisements offering closing sales over an extended period, or stating items will no longer be reproduced. BBB Code of Advertising states where the advertiser states that it is going out of business or closing down, it must actually be going out of business or closing down. Where the advertiser is not going out of business or closing down, it can advertise that it is “selling out” a product or “closing out” particular merchandise, as long as that advertiser will no longer carry that product or merchandise.

Additionally, BBB requested the business substantiate that multiple products on its website are officially licensed. BBB Code of Advertising states the primary responsibility for truthful and non-deceptive advertising rests with the advertiser. Advertisers should be prepared to substantiate any objective claims or offers made before publication or broadcast. Upon request, they should present such substantiation promptly to the advertising medium or BBB.

As of December 31, 2019, the business has not responded to BBB’s attempts to address these concerns.
