BBB General Comments on Asphalt / Paving Dealers- Itinerant:
When considering hiring a traveling asphalt company, ask for local references and verify that the contractor is in compliance with all local licensing, bonding and insuring requirements. Make sure all promises are put into writing and do not sign any agreement without understanding it. If the paving service was sold to you at your home, the FTC's 3-Day Cooling Off Rule gives
you three business days to cancel with a full refund. If you hire a contractor, pay by check when the work is completed to your satisfaction.
BBB General Statement on Contracts:
With any business transaction, you should obtain in writing, read and thoroughly understand all terms and conditions of the purchase before placing an order, paying any money or signing an agreement. Be sure to have any verbal promises included in the written agreement before you sign. And, always keep a copy of what you sign for your personal records.
BBB General Statement on home improvement contracts:
Home improvement contracts should always be in writing and contain the name, address and phone number of the company, complete disclosure of the cost of materials and labor, all guarantees and any verbal promises made by the company representative. Make sure you receive a copy of the contract. Checks should be made payable to the company, not an individual. You should also understand that some, but not all, contracts may be cancelled within 3 business days (this includes Saturday). You may also wish to contact the building department at your city hall to determine if the firm is licensed or registered to do work in your community. Require the company to get any necessary building permits. Ask the company to provide a release of lien clause to your contract to protect yourself from liens against your home. The BBB also suggests that you not sign a completion certificate until the work is completed.
For more information, you may wish to contact your local law enforcement agency or the South Carolina Attorney General's Affairs Office at (803)734-4200.
