Alert

On August 1, 2018, BBB received a complaint from a consumer alleging she received a message through Instagram from Ruth Bailey Portfolio, https://www.instagram.com/ruthbaileyportfolio/ stating they needed a model for their fashion website and would pay for this service. The business referred the consumer to Dennis Cleverly who provided the consumer with more information about the photo shoot which would be allegedly held at a local photography studio because Ruth and Dennis were located in Oregon several hundreds of miles away from the consumer's location.  Dennis sent the consumer a check for $933 instructing the consumer to deposit the check and pay the stylist, who also lived several hundreds of miles away, $600 via Money Gram.  According to Dennis, the stylist never received the Money Gram so the consumer was instructed to purchase $300 in iTunes gift cards to purchase fabric.  Dennis then instructed the consumer to scratch off the back of the card, take a picture of the code and send it to him to ensure delivery.  The next day, the consumer discovered the check she deposited bounced and she is now responsible to pay the bank $953 for depositing a counterfeit check.  The consumer reached out to the company who denies they sent her a fake check, has not provided a new form of payment and has stopped communicating.

BBB found Ruth Bailey Portfolio does not have a business registration with Oregon Secretary of State.  BBB found the address maps to a residential location that is not owed by Ruth Bailey or Dennis Cleverly.  BBB could not find a physical location for this company. BBB could not find any information for this alleged company.  BBB found the photos posted on Instagram were first added on June 13, 2018. BBB called the business and left a message on a generic voicemail that did not provide any name or business name in the greeting.  BBB has sent the alleged company a letter and is awaiting a response.

If you are a victim of this scheme, BBB recommends reporting your experience using BBB’s Scam Tracker at https://www.bbb.org/scamtracker/us and filing a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission at www.ftc.gov, FBI at www.ic3.gov and the Oregon Attorney General’s office at https://justice.oregon.gov/consumercomplaints/OnlineComplaints/OnlineComplaintForm/en.
