- Additional Info:April 18, 2005 DSW issued the findings of an investigation into the theft of credit card and other purchase information from some customers. According to DSW, information was stolen from 108 stores primarily between November 2004 and February 2005. Transaction information involving 1.4 million credit cards was obtained as well as information involving 96,000 checks. This information appears to have involved debit cards used as credit cards. No PIN numbers were in the stolen data. DWS also states no addresses or other information relating to the card customers were stolen. Bank account numbers located on checks that were provided to DSW and the driver's license numbers provided when paying by check, were stolen, however this did not include name, address or social security number of the customer.
DSW provided American Express, Discover, VISA and MasterCard with all of the credit and debit card numbers that were stolen. VISA and MasterCard provided the card numbers to the appropriate issuing banks. DSW states, "If you shopped at one of the stores noted, you may want to contact your credit card company." If you believe your checking account information may have been part of the stolen information, DSW suggests you: Telephone your bank immediately; Call your state DMV to see if another license was issued in your name, put a fraud alert on your drivers license and request a new license number; Obtain your consumer credit report and place a fraud alert on same; Report any crimes to your local police if there is evidence someone is using your information; File your case with the Federal Trade Commission by calling 877-438-4338 or visit www.consumer.gov/idtheft.
