Indication of adequate oversight includes, but is not limited to, regularly scheduled appraisals of the CEO's performance, evidence of disbursement controls such as board approval of the budget, fundraising practices, establishment of a conflict of interest policy, and establishment of accounting procedures sufficient to safeguard charity finances.

    The organization meets this standard.

  2. Board Size

Number of Board Members: Standard 2

    Description
Soliciting organizations shall have a board of directors with a minimum of five voting members.

A conference call of the full board can substitute for one of the three meetings of the governing body. For all meetings, alternative modes of participation are acceptable for those with physical disabilities.

    The organization meets this standard.

  4. Board Compensation

    Compensated Board Members: Standard 4

    Description

  5. Conflict of Interest

    Conflict of Interest: Standard 5

    Description
No transaction(s) in which any board or staff members have material conflicting interests with the charity resulting from any relationship or business affiliation. Factors that will be considered when concluding whether or not a related party transaction constitutes a conflict of interest and if such a conflict is material, include, but are not limited to: any arm's length procedures established by the charity; the size of the transaction relative to like expenses of the charity; whether the interested party participated in the board vote on the transaction; if competitive bids were sought and whether the transaction is one-time, recurring or ongoing.

Purpose

  • Year, State Incorporated

    2000, NY

  • Stated Purpose

Catskill Animal Sanctuary rescues farmed animals, ignites social change to end their exploitation, and champions vegan living.

Programs

Animal Rescue: Catskill Animal Sanctuary is a 150-acre haven for horses, other equines, and nine species of farmed animals rescued from desperate situations of cruelty, neglect, and abandonment. Since our founding in 2001 we have rescued over 5,000 animals, and between 250 and 400 are in our care at any given time. We take animals in urgent need and show them that they are now safe, they are loved, and they matter - and we help them to finally thrive. Some animals become available for adoption to approved families and individuals. In addition to providing rescue and high-quality, lifelong care, we operate dynamic educational programs designed to inspire our visitors and online followers to make compassionate choices and help create a better world for all animals: Sanctuary Tours: The Sanctuary is open to the public on weekends, April through November, for educational "meet the animals " tours. Visitors meet rescued animals, hear their stories, and learn about the plight of farmed animals and how they can help. The Sanctuary also provides tours year-round for schools, community groups (any group of 10 or more people), Sanctuary members, and guests at The Homestead, the on-site bed-and-breakfast.Animals On Call: This program enables participants to get “nose-to-screen” on a virtual tour with snuggly sheep, mischievous goats, gentle turkeys, and other rescued animals. Participants meet the animals, hear their stories, and learn about their unique personalities and their lives at the Sanctuary. Content is tailored to the ages of the participants and our educators do their best to honor requests to visit specific residents (but we can’t make guarantees since they have their own agendas!). Groups of all kinds, from digital school trips and corporate calls to birthday parties and happy hours, are welcome to book with the Sanctuary.Youth Programs: Programs for school students and youth in other educational programs (e.g. clubs and summer camps), whether virtual or in person, are designed to align with New York State educational standards for multiple subject areas and can be tailored to meet your class or group’s needs (see website for more information). We welcome youth groups of all types!Herd Around the Barn: Hosted by Kathy Stevens, author, speaker, and founder of Catskill Animal Sanctuary, our podcast unpacks three main reasons to go vegan: minimizing animal suffering, improving our personal health, and reducing our environmental impact. The podcast intersperses conversations with game-changing thought leaders, activists, plant-based chefs and others with intimate animal moments.Compassionate Cuisine: The Sanctuary’s award-winning vegan culinary program is designed to show how easy and delicious it is to cook without using animal products. Original recipes, which are designed to be creative, budget-friendly, and approachable for all skill levels, are featured in on-site and online cooking classes and demonstrations, and in the cookbook, Compassionate Cuisine - 125 Plant-Based Recipes from Our Vegan Kitchen.
