July 3, 2019 – A consumer reported to BBB he entered into a contract for tree service with the owner of this business, Alva Lewis, despite the ban that prohibits the owner from doing tree removal work in North Carolina. According to paperwork provided by the consumer, the owner is now using the business name "Ed’s Tree and Stump", located in Lexington, NC.

Alva Lewis is the owner of A1 Tree and Storm Damage Relief, aka A1 Tree and Storm Relief, aka Big Al and Sons Tree Service. Government Action: BBB reports on known significant government actions involving business’ marketplace conduct:

NC vs Alva Wilson Lewis, a/k/a Al Lewis, individually, and d/b/a A1 Tree & Storm Relief, and A1 Tree and Storm Damage Relief, and Big Al & Sons Tree Service

The following describes a government action that has been resolved by either a settlement or a decision by a court or administrative agency. If the matter is being appealed, it will be noted below.

The owner of A1 Tree and Storm Damage Relief, also known as Big Al and Son’s, is barred from doing tree removal or storm damage recovery work in North Carolina.

On Tuesday, April 23, 2019, the North Carolina Attorney General’s Office was granted a default judgment against Alva Wilson Lewis, who does business under the names A1 Tree & Storm Relief, A1 Tree and Storm Damage Relief, and Big Al & Sons Tree Service.

The default judgment settles a price gouging lawsuit against Lewis. The AG’s office alleged an employee of his business provided an estimate of $4,000 to remove three trees for a Wilmington homeowner in the wake of Hurricane Florence. The price then jumped to $7,000 and a final invoice charged the customer $12,000. The homeowner ultimately paid $6,000.

Lewis is required to pay $6,000 in restitution to consumers and $20,000 in fines.
