Pattern of Complaints
In complaints filed to the Better Business Bureau, consumers typically allege that they were either unaware that the FAFSA can be filed for free or that they felt misled by the company's website. While Student Aid Application Service's website mentioned that they were not affiliated with the government and that the FAFSA may be filed for free, the BBB has continued to receive complaints.
Many consumers thought that they were already on the government website and did not expect to find, nor searched for, disclosures to the contrary until they had already paid.
The BBB asked the company what steps they plan on taking to reduce the number of complaints. Though the company believed that complaints represented only a small number of visitors, they made changes to the website that should help prevent confusion. Customers are now required to check a box acknowledging that they wish to use Student Aid Application Services even though they could use the fafsa.ed.gov website for free.
