          Government Actions
          US Dept. of Justice Settlement
          On October 29, 2020,  Medtronic USA Inc. agreed to pay $8.1 million to resolve allegations that it violated the False Claims Act by paying kickbacks to induce a South Dakota neurosurgeon to use certain Medtronic products, the Department of Justice announced.  Medtronic also agreed to pay an additional $1.11 million to resolve allegations that it violated the Open Payments Program by failing to accurately report payments it made to the neurosurgeon to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS).  The settlement was the result of an investigation by the Department of Justice's Civil Division, the U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of South Dakota, and HHS-OIG.  As part of the settlement, Medtronic agreed to cooperate with the Department's investigations of and litigation against other parties and the business took action once it learned of the wrongdoing, including terminating staff and disciplining other employees involved. The agreement was for settlement purposes only and should not be considered as an admission of guilt or finding of violation of the law. For more details go to the press release or this link.
