HelpingHands Hawaii has served the community since our incorporation in 1974 byproviding stabilizationsupports for low-income, homeless andat-risk children, families, and adults. This support includesaccess to free household essentials, school supplyand holiday assistance; emergency ?nancial assistance to keep families housedand utilities connected or to aid in securing permanent housing for those transitioning out ofhomelessness; assistance with the application and maintenance of SNAP bene?ts to reducefood insecurity amongvulnerable populations; languageinterpretation and translation to assist individualswith limited English pro?ciency to receive common public services (medical,dental, educational,legal and more); andrepresentative payee services for adults with severe and persistent mentalillness who are unable to manage their ?nancesalone. Each year approximately 15,000-20,000 individuals seek out and receive assistance from our programs and services. Programsand services include:The CommunityClearinghouse is a year-round donation warehouse and distribution center thatprovides free material support to households experiencing crises, includingpoverty, homelessness and natural or man-made emergencies. It uses a network ofsocial service providers, or a one-time walk-in procedure, to offer services toan array of vulnerable populations. By receiving free necessities, individualsand families more effectively use their funds to address challenges and movetoward household stability quicker so that they can become self-sufficient inthe future.Readyto Learn provides Hawaii students, gradesK-12, with basic schoolsupplies needed for their education. Participants are referred to the programthrough our large network of communitypartners.AdoptA Family is a holiday programthat links individuals andfamilies in need with donors in the community. Participants are referred to the programthrough our large network of communitypartners, and donors participate by adopting a family and ful?lling theirholiday Wish Lists.The EmergencyAssistance Program provides financial assistance to individuals and familiesat-risk of or currently experiencing homelessness. This one-time emergencyassistance for rent, utilities and mortgage bills helps households maintaintheir housing and stability as well as aids others who are working totransition into permanent housing. The program provides case managementsupport, a required financial literacy workshop and links to communityresources for additional support.TheSNAP Outreach program helps at-risk, vulnerable and low-income individuals andhouseholds to access SNAP benefits (formerly known as food stamps).Thisincludes help with filling out, submitting and following up on applications;providing interpretive assistance to Limited English Proficient (LEP)individuals; helping recipients maintain benefits; and conducting SNAPnutrition educational activities designed to ensure proper use of the SNAPbenefit.TheBilingual Access Line provides spoken interpretation and written translationservices 24 hours a day, 7 days a week in 19 primary languages with referralsto 90 secondary languages. The primary languages covered include: Cantonese,Chuukese, Ilokano, Japanese, Korean, Laotian, Mandarin, Marshallese, Pohnpeian,Portuguese, Russian, Samoan, Spanish,Tagalog, Taiwanese, Thai, Tongan, Vietnamese and Visayan. Interpretation and translationservices reduce language barriers that prevent the limited English proficient(LEP) community from accessing community resources, like healthcare, education,legal representation, housing and more. BAL is a fee-for-service program thatcharges the vendor (e.g. doctor’s office, law firm, government agency, etc.),who is serving the LEP community, for language assistance.RepresentativePayee Services manages the social security and disability benefits for adultswith severe and persistent mental illness. These individuals are unable tooversee their finances on their own due to the severity of their illness.Working alongside the Social Security Administration (SSA) to ensure thatclient benefits are properly managed and administered, their RP Servicesactivities include: 1) working with the individual's social worker on a monthlybudget that will cover basic living expenses (housing, food, phone,transportation, etc.) as well as allow, if possible, for small personal allowancesand savings; 2) being responsible for directly paying all monthly budgetedexpenses (rent, care home costs, phone bills, utility bills, medical bills,etc.); 3) being responsible for paying unbudgeted special requests (birthdaygifts, toiletries, other requested items); 4) keeping track of all expenses viareceipts and monitoring of the client trust funds in the bank; 5) responding toreview and annual audit requests from the Department of Health, Ohana HealthPlan and the SSA; and 6) helping the individual and their social worker to movetoward greater independence, when possible, in the management of theirbenefits/finances.
