BBB provides the following tips when searching online for a pet:

Research any business and its owners carefully before paying any money. Check the company's BBB Business Profile at bbb.org.

If possible, try to pick up the animal in person. Pet scams depend on buyers trusting that the animals will be delivered to them.

Be careful about buying an animal from anyone you don't know, and be especially skeptical if the price is much lower than normal.

Avoid wiring money or using prepaid cards or gift cards to pay for transporting animals. Instead pay by credit card in case you need to challenge the purchase later.

Research pet adoption requirements in your area. Get a good grasp on what fees, permits and licenses are required by your local government and know whether they should be collected by the seller or government.

Consider getting a rescue pet if having a purebred dog is not a priority. Generally, rescues are less expensive than purebred pets and often have fewer health problems.

BBB Investigation Results

BBB's role in the marketplace is to promote and foster ethical relationships between businesses and the public through voluntary self-regulation efforts. BBB is a not-for-profit organization that works with both BBB Accredited and non-accredited businesses to help build a stronger foundation for customer relationships and marketplace trust.

We received a submission in BBB's Scam Tracker regarding the marketplace practices of United Courier Express.

The consumer alleged they were attempting to purchase a Ragdoll kitten and requested the kitten be delivered. An adoption contract was sent after a $200 was paid. The alleged breeder sent the consumer the courier information along with the tracking information. The courier called to confirm the time of delivery. The consumer further alleges that at this point, the courier emailed stating they needed to pay for pet insurance in the amount of $950. After doing some research, they determined that pet insurance was not mandatory. They were told to contact the breeder and they responded by stating "they had never had a problem with the courier before" and indicated they would be willing to pay half of the insurance costs. At this time, the consumer states they had paid $1,41 and stop any further transactions with the breeder and the courier company.

BBB asked United Courier Express to respond to the consumer's allegations.

United Courier Express did not respond.
