Patient-brokering guilty plea lands Boynton Beach-area man on probation. Prosecutors say John Hanley paid kickbacks to a substance-abuse treatment center for patient referrals to AML Diagnostics, his Boca Raton lab.
A suburban Boynton Beach man accused of paying thousands of dollars in kickbacks for patient referrals to his clinical lab received probation Wednesday after he pleaded guilty to charges of patient brokering and failing to disclose his financial interest in patient urine tests, court records show.
John P. Hanley was placed on 60 months of probation after Circuit Judge Rosemarie Scher withheld adjudication on four counts of patient brokering. The move means that Hanley won't have a felony conviction on his record if he completes all the terms of his probation.
Hanley, 54, was found guilty of the failure to disclose financial interest by production, a first-degree misdemeanor, and was credited with serving one day in jail.
Hanley faced charges following his June 2019 arrest, when Delray Beach police alleged that he paid monthly kickbacks to the owners of a substance-abuse treatment center in that city in exchange for the center referring patients to his lab. At the time, Hanley was the president of AML Diagnostics in Boca Raton, authorities said. Investigators said that, starting in about August 2016, he paid more than $200,000 per month for an average of 700 urinalysis referrals.
As part of the terms of his probation, Hanley agreed to avoid working directly in any capacity related to medical field, substance abuse treatment, clinical lab testing and recovery housing. He must also pay $20,000 in fines, complete 50 hours of community service and make himself available to testify at trials, motions, depositions and any meetings requested by the state in relation to the Sober Homes Task Force, court records show.
