- Additional Info:On Friday, August 14, 2009, Colonial Bank, Montgomery, AL was closed by the Alabama State Banking Department, and the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) was named Receiver.
All deposit accounts have been transferred to Branch Banking and Trust Company, (BB&T), Winston-Salem, NC ("assuming institution") and will be available immediately. The former Colonial Bank locations will reopen as branches of BB&T. Each location will operate by the same schedule as branches of BB&T, and customers can keep writing checks, using debit cards and using automated teller machines as usual. Loan customers should make payments as usual. All deposits, even those above the FDIC's insurance levels, were bought by BB&T.
BB&T, with $152 billion in assets, has three branches in Anniston and Birmingham with about $150 million in deposits, ranking it No. 58 in Alabama before Friday.
Colonial had 7.54 percent of deposits in Mobile and Baldwin counties, about $640.7 million, according to federal data. It had eight offices in Baldwin County, four in Mobile County and one each in Brewton and Evergreen. All those offices will now report to a BB&T bank region based in Montgomery, officials said.
