While there are many reputable contractors available, watch out for high pressure sales tactics, especially for unsolicited business and never feel you need to make a decision immediately. Better Business Bureau often hears complaints related to quality of the job and difficulty communicating with a business when repairs are needed. One way to avoid issues is to do you research before deciding on a business. You BBB has tips to help guide you when looking for a paving contractor:Get multiple bids. Shop around and compare multiple businesses. Check their BBB Business Review for background information on the business including complaint history, customer reviews, accreditation status, licensing credentials and more. Compare prices and scope of job to help you find a business that will complete the job to your satisfaction and budget. Not sure where to start? Your BBB has a list of accredited paving contractors available.
Read the contract carefully. Be sure the contract includes the full scope of the project. Review the terms and conditions and fully understand any warrantee or guarantees offered as well as their cancellation policy. Make sure the business addresses all of your questions before you sign any documents.
Don’t pay in full. You may be asked by a business for full payment of services before the job even begins. You should never pay more than half, holding the balance until you have had the opportunity to inspect the job after completion. Many unsolicited requests for business ask for payment in full and do not complete the job as promised. Checks payable to the company are the safest form of payment, avoid making cash transactions as there is little recourse.
Watch out for ‘bait and switch’ tactics. Some disreputable companies will claim they used more materials than originally planned and leave you with an unexpected increase in your final bill. Get conditions like this in writing and understand the terms in advance. When in doubt contact a Marketplace Counsellor at BBB Serving the Atlantic Provinces.
